Momotamoy Korail is the flagship project of the Society. The project began in 2015 in the Korail Slum, with the aim of taking palliative care beyond academic institutions and bringing it closer to people at the grassroots level.
The initial focus was to reduce the suffering of elderly individuals living with age-related conditions and incurable illnesses. The initiative was developed through a joint effort of World Hospice and Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA) and a medical university, emphasizing strong community engagement and participation.
After the completion of the project’s initial funding period, Palliative Care Society of Bangladesh (PCSB) assumed full responsibility for the project in February 2021. Since then, the program has been sustained primarily through Zakat funds and general donations.
Bangladesh is home to approximately 14,000 slums, sheltering nearly 1.8 million people. Among them, Korail is the largest slum, located beside the affluent neighborhoods of Gulshan and Banani in Dhaka. While precise data is unavailable, local sources estimate that around 450,000 people live in Korail, including approximately 40,000 children.
