Efforts to introduce palliative care in Bangladesh began sporadically during the 1990s. Early initiatives included Ashik Palliative Care for Children and the efforts of the Afzalunnesa Foundation.
A major milestone was reached in 2007, when visible and structured palliative care services were initiated at the university level through Bangladesh Medical University. This marked a turning point and created a renewed national dialogue on palliative care.
What began as a limited initiative gradually expanded with the involvement of committed individuals, as well as national, private, and international service-oriented organizations, all working toward comprehensive palliative care delivery. As a result of these collective efforts, the Palliative Care Society of Bangladesh (PCSB) was established in 2011. The organization was formally registered in 2013 under the Department of Social Services of the Ministry of Social Welfare (Registration No. Dh-09030).
