Respite Care Anondo Program

Five years after children were included in the project in 2016, the children’s program team observed that while physical suffering had improved to some extent, more needed to be done to enhance the overall quality of life of these children. Social stigma surrounding disability and feelings of shame within families often confine these children to a single room or bed for years. At the same time, family caregivers—especially parents—become physically and emotionally exhausted from providing continuous care. In response, the Anando (Respite Care) Program was launched in February 2022. Once a week, trained palliative care assistants and volunteers bring children from their homes to the center. For 6 to 8 hours, the center takes full responsibility for their care, including feeding, hygiene, and supervision. During this time, children engage in play activities, interact with other children, and receive physiotherapy in a safe and supportive environment. Meanwhile, parents and caregivers are able to rest, attend to personal responsibilities, or simply take time for themselves.
